The High Court in Blantyre has sentenced a police officer Andrew Chagaga to 30 years imprisonment for raping a 17-year old Malawi University of Business and Applies Sciences (MUBAS) student.
According to the judge who was in charge of the case Vikochi Chima, the police officer failed in his duty, thus slapping him with a lengthy jail term with hard labour.
Chagaga raped the female student twice in 2020, when she was in custody at Limbe police Station.
Malawians have expressed satisfaction with the ruling. They believe this is a good lesson to would be offenders.
When Chagaga was being ferried to Chichiri Prison, they were ululations outside the court. Women chanted in unison, in expression of their satisfaction with the court`s action.
