The Zomba city mayor Dave Maunde has warned contractors assigned to upgrade roads in the old capital against doing poor work that is below the required standards.
Maunde says the council will not hesitate to cancel contracts where workers do not stick to the minimum standards.
The mayor indicated that the council will intensify regular monitoring and inspection of the road construction works to ensure there is no comprising on standards.
The remarks were made during the handover of sites to three firms contracted to work on the Sikinala-Chakhaza road, Kalimbuka Ring road and Likangala-Mpondabwino road.
The Government has pumped in K4.1 billion for the project.
“Shoddy works derail development, since such projects require extra funds for renovations, thereby draining government resources which would have been channelled to other equally important projects,” Maunde said.
Pams Construction Managing Director Patrick Mbalame, whose firm has been assigned the Sikinala-Chakhaza Road, pledged to do a good job.
