Malawi men and women national football teams spoiled the home mood on Thursday after suffering humiliating losses against Burkina Faso and South Africa respectively.
The Flames stormed Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou to face the Stallions in the 2021 African Cup of Nations qualification campaign.
It was a night to forget for Meke Mwase charges as they went down by 3 goals to 1. Malawi’s lone goal was scored by Gerald Phiri junior from the penalty spot. The result leaves the Flames stuck in 3rd position of group H with three points.
Other teams in the four-team group are Uganda and South Sudan. The former is in second position while the latter is at the bottom of the group.
On the ladies side, it rained goals as they were clobbered by 6 goals to 2 by South Africa’s Banyanabanyana in Cosafa Women’s tournament semi-finals. Malawi`s goals were scored by sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga.
The loss mean the scorchers are out of the tournament, let alone fight for the third spot with Zambia whom they defeated in group stages.
The results have disappointed football loving Malawians who were hoping for a double celebration. People believe the Flames victory in the return leg against Burkina Faso, and Scorchers victory in the third place fight, will assuage the pain.
