Ministry of Agriculture has granted a seed certificate (technology registration) to Ikaros Africa Limited on six Medicinal Cannabis Seed, an exotic medicinal hemp varities for commercial production.
Director of Ikaros Africa Limited Mr Chauncy Mopho Jere said that the government had granted them the certificate upon receiving the recommendation made by the Agricultural Technology Clearing Committee ( ATCC) for its commercilization and promotion among the large-scale farmers in Malawi.
Jere further said that Ikaros Africa has six seed strains registered in their name and these are the only medicinal cannabis seed strains that can be grown in Malawi at this stage upon doing a research which they conducted at Chitala Research Station in Salima.
The seed strain registration requires three successful commercial trials per seed strain over a period of 2 to 3 years and this provides a significant barrier to entry.
