Dark Friday for Democratic Progressive Party regional governor for the North Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira as he has been sentenced to four years imprisonment.
Ngwira abused local development funds to the tune of K250, 000. The funds were designated for construction of a teacher’s house at Lukwelukwe when he was a member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora.
Senior Resident Magistrate Mathews Msiska defended his judgement. He said it is meant to deter other public offices from abusing money from government coffers.
Some people have questioned the judgement, arguing that it is too harsh since the abused funds are meagre.
“So he is going to jail for abusing K250, 000? This is a harsh judgement. He was just supposed to repay the money, said Ismail Chatha
Wickless Chipala also commented, “money is too little. We make bricks and receive that amount. Why the court didn’t tell him to refund?” At the court, Ngwira had the support of some DPP top guns including the party’s deputy president for the south Kondwani Nakhumwa.
